Description: A prerequisite to farming in the Ribeira Sacra would be not being even slightly afraid of heights. The region is home to some of the steepest slopes in the wine world, whose winemakers risk it all to farm here. The region is located in Galicia of Spain, whose higher altitudes and slate soils work to produce some very fresh and mineral wines in the country.
Laura Lorenzo had started her journey into winemaking at the young age of 16 when she had enrolled in winemaking school. Her stints around the world - Eben Sadie in South Africa, Achaval Ferrer in Argentina - had eventually brought her back to the Ribeira where she worked for Dominio do Bibei for 10 years, an estate that is thought to have put the region on the world map of wine lovers everywhere. Laura had founded Daterra Viticultores in 2014 with her partner and makes a variety of minimal intervention wines with the local varieties of the region. The Portela do Vento Tinto wines are made with Mencía and Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouschet), fermented with wild yeasts in steel vats, and raised for 9 months in used 500 liter French barrels.
