Varieties: Pinot Gris
Type: White Wine
Region & Country: Alsace, France
Description: The Zind-Humbrecht estate has been in the hands of the Humbrecht family for 13 generations. Current generation winemaker and owner Olivier Humbrecht is prominent person in the biodynamic authority in France and also happens to be a Master of Wine. The Humbrecht family now owns about 40 hectares in Alsace with vines also in 4 various Grand Cru vineyards.
The Rangen de Thann Grand Cru is dominated by a volcanic subsoil that produces wines of an almost smoky and peaty character. The vineyard is about 22 hectares in size and the Clos Saint Urban, a smaller walled-vineyard within the Grand Cru of Rangen de Thann is owned wholly by the Humbrecht family. The Clos is named after a chapel that was built there at the end of the 15th century but was destroyed during the French Revolution a few hundred years later. The chapel was later rebuilt in 1934 and still stands to this day. This Pinot Gris is easily one of the most powerful yet elegant and complex example of the variety ever made.
